Memorial Day kicks off the start of summer festivities every year. It is always the last Monday in May. This year it falls on Monday, May 30, 2016.
The Memorial Day holiday isn’t just about backyard BBQs, Memorial Day sales and enjoying a long weekend. It’s about remembering the people who have died while serving in our country’s armed forces. Memorial Day originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868. After World War II the day was used to honor soldiers who died in all wars, rather than just the Civil War. In 1967 the name of the holiday was officially changed to Memorial Day. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.
Many people enjoy taking a 3-day weekend or having backyard barbecues with family and friends. Some head for the beach while others hit their favorite spots inland. If you are looking for something to do with the family consider local Memorial Day events.
Local Events this Memorial Day include:
The Gainesville, FL chapter of Veterans for Peace place tombstones along Northwest Eighth Avenue between 23rd and 34th Street for all military deaths in the Mideast since the fighting began in Afghanistan in 2001. http://www.vfpgainesville.org/
The Blue Crab Festival takes place from Friday, May 27th through Memorial Day on Monday, May 30th. It is good to take the time to honor our armed forces. Here are some things you can do; At 3pm local time, the National Moment of Remembrance is observed. Just spend one minute reflecting on the men and women who fight for freedom. If you fly a US flag, be sure to fly it at half mast until noon. Find a good charity and donate to the families of those who have lost their lives to keep America free. Visit a war memorial and learn about the history of the battles, the war, and the soldiers who fought them. You could wear red, white, and blue to show your support.
Be safe this year and Happy Memorial Day wishes from our family to yours.
